Tim Vine Live in Banstead

Saturday 1st May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

Tim VineWhen you see local celebrity Tim Vine perform you certainly get value for money. He is a joke machine gun, rattling out one joke after another in quick succession. At full pelt Tim sprays out 10 jokes a minute. Keep the laughs short, he's got a lot to get through.

Star of BBC1's Not Going Out [3 series] and winner of Celebrity Mastermind with his chosen subject Elvis Presley, Tim also recently sold-out his debut appearance at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, which led to a cameo role in Neighbours. Further TV credits include Countdown and resident comedian on Richard and Judy, Celebrity Fame Academy and The Royal Variety Show. He has also played to sell-out audiences at the critically acclaimed Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.

Tim has sold-out five Edinburgh Festival shows and four UK tours and in 2010 he embarks on a nationwide tour with his brand new show 'The Joke-amotive'.

Tim's basic philosophy is, 'The audience came to hear jokes so I'll give 'em jokes' – and that's what he does. He gives them several hundred very silly ones.

Vine is superb, as clever as anything being done today– The Guardian

Wednesday 5th May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

Instant SunshineAlan Maryon-Davis Peter Christie David Barlow 'Instant Sunshine' is a unique musical comedy team, who have a delightfully fresh and understated approach to singing their own original humorous songs. With hilarious self-parody they take a sideways look at everyday events in a beguiling and very funny style all their own.

They play regularly at festivals and theatres throughout the United Kingdom and have delighted audiences on their travels round the world to New York, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Bermuda. On their first appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe over 30 years ago they were voted the Hit of the Fringe. Instant Sunshine have written and performed many signature tunes for radio and television programmes including Oneupmanship, Money Box, Constant Hot Water, and for their own series of Jackanory. Their long association with BBC Radio's Stop the Week gave Instant Sunshine the opportunity to reach a wide audience; they enjoy the intimate venues particularly but have had audiences in the Albert Hall singing along in Christmas concerts and a packed house at Chichester Cathedral shouting for more.

Ann Clements presents The Hermitage and its Treasures

St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum, housed in a magnificent ensemble of buildings of which the most impressive is the Winter Palace, contains one of the world's largest and most valuable collections of fine art. The patterned parquet flooring, dazzling chandeliers, and extravagant and turbulent history of the 1750s-era palace almost distract from the riches on display – but not quite. Whether it be Scythian gold, antique vases and cameos, or Iranian silver, every room holds something to capture the eye. Particularly celebrated is the collection of European Ann Clementspaintings put together largely according to the personal taste of the imperial family while most of the 19th and 20th-century European art, notably the Impressionists, Matisse and Picasso, came from private collections after the Revolution.

Ann Clements is a popular NADFAS lecturer with wide experience both at home and abroad.

Her earlier work includes cataloguing English watercolours and drawings for the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, research for the Paul Mellon Foundation, and university lecturing.

School Choirs Competition

Saturday 8th May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

Richard Stangroom, Sue Rowlinson and Geoffrey Barham, Adjudicators - Sponsored by Banstead Coaches Limited

Twelve choirs from ten local schools – in total some 300 young singers - will be competing in this unique event to mark our 30th Anniversary. Two choirs will be competing in the Up to 8 category, eight in the 8 to 13 category and two in the 11 to 18 category, with each choir singing two contrasting own-choice pieces.

We are delighted that the competition will be in the hands of three extremely experienced adjudicators from the immediate area. Richard Stangroom [Chairman] has held appointments as Professor of Harmony, Counterpoint and Organ at Trinity College of Music, Senior Lecturer at the Froebel Institute and Conductor of St. Alban's Chamber Choir, but will be best known to Banstead as Conductor for 42 years of the Banstead Musical Society [now performing as St.Cecilia Chorus]; Sue Rowlinson is an East Surrey singing and piano teacher, who has been musical director of twelve shows for societies in Surrey and Sussex;Geoffrey Barham has been involved in youth music for almost 40 years, as music teacher and head teacher, conductor of massed school choirs at venues including Southwark Cathedral and the Fairfield Halls, organiser of youth music tours to European countries and composer of music for children.

Admission: since the number of performers and the size of the venue mean public seating is limited, each participating school will be allocated a number of free tickets for the afternoon and evening sessions, to distribute as they wish.

BAFS and the participating schools are very grateful to Banstead Coaches Limited for its generous donation of the prizes, and to the Headmistress of Greenacre School, Mrs. Lindsay Redding and her staff for their kind hosting of the competition.

Banstead Organ and Keyboard Club proudly presents Jean Martyn in Concert

Monday 10th May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

Jean MartynJean Martyn's range of music is vast, extending from classical to jazz and modern dance. As well as the electronic keyboard that she will be playing tonight, Jean also plays the piano together with classical and Wurlitzer organs. She has played in the USA and Europe and at concert venues the length and breadth of Great Britain, where she is much in demand. In 2010 Jean will be playing her first concert in Hamburg for the BBC.

Flexibility and fun are the hallmarks of Jean's performances which draw their depth from her extensive classical training, yet she can embrace the dextrous Jazz and Big Band influences that are natural for a performer who has played with the James Last Orchestra and at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. She is a hugely versatile player and is quite likely to decide what she will play for you tonight as she comes out on stage.

Banstead History Research Group with the Banstead History Centre present Sir Henry Lambert's Banstead The village 100 years ago

Wednesday 12th May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

Sir Henry Lambert

Sir Henry Lambert was an eminent local historian, archaeologist and member of the Lambert family. His role in recording the history of Banstead was perhaps unsurpassed, but he was also dedicated to preserving the most appealing aspects of the village and its surroundings, to ensure that much of the best was not destroyed and that much of the fine common land that surrounded the area remained in being.

Come along and enjoy a virtual tour of the Banstead area in the early 1900s with Sir Henry as the guide. Based loosely on an account of a similar tour described by Sir Henry in his 'Three Lectures' book, we will visit places such as Well House, the Well, Well Farm and All Saints' Church. Then, after pausing for refreshment at a local hostelry, we will continue through the village, admiring the view over Banstead Downs, and visiting Garratts Hall, the seat of the Lambert family for many years. Finally, we will continue along the Brighton Road towards Tadworth.

There will be displays of historical material, a bookstall and a raffle.

WEA Banstead and Reigate Branch. Looking at Degas -Dancers, Horses and Nudes

Friday 14th May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

An illustrated talk by Dr. Katy Brown

DegasEdgar Degas has sometimes been called the older brother of Impressionism and is one of the most controversial artists of the group. His studies of race horses, ballet dancers and nudes have been widely admired and tell us a lot about life in 19th Century Paris. Yet feminists castigate him as an ill-tempered misogynist and voyeur. Is this criticism fair or is it a misinterpretation of Degas and his work? This lecture will be extensively illustrated with colour slides, so come and have a look and decide for yourself how he should be seen.

Dr. Katy Brown is an historian turned art historian with wide experience in lecturing to WEA and Higher Education Groups and to local groups including NADFAS and the National Trust. She has a particular interest in the Italian Renaissance and in 19th Century Impressionist painting.

Chichester Festival Theatre and Bignor Roman Villa with Banstead Coaches

Wed 19th & Thu 27th May 2010
Banstead Aets Festival - 2009

Meet at 8.25am outside Banstead Library in the Horseshoe, returning about 6.30pm

We travel to Chichester via Bignor Roman Villa, the stunning remains of a Roman home and farm in a spectacular downland setting. On our guided tour we will see the exquisite mosaic floors, with such designs as Venus, the reluctant Cherub Gladiators, Ganymede and the Four Seasons, the North corridor and heated hypocaust floor. There will be time for refreshments in the newly-refurbished tearoom above the Roman courtyard.

We then move on to Chichester in time for lunch and personal sight-seeing in the old town, before the matinee performance at 2.00 pm in the Festival Theatre of the new comedy

'Yes, Prime Minister' by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn

The original writers of the two classic TV series 'Yes, Minister', and 'Yes, Prime Minister' have reunited for this appropriately thirtieth anniversary production and now the Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back, in a brand new play. Henry Goodman plays Sir Humphrey Appleby and David Haig plays Jim Hacker.

The world, of course, has turned meanwhile. Spin has become an art form. Dossiers have been 'sexed up', the special relationship put to the test and countless MPs have stood down to 'spend more time with their families'. But great institutions have a way of riding punches and bouncing back unscathed for the next round.

Will it prove so for Jim Hacker and his coterie of close advisors? Especially with the country on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government's only apparent salvation coming from an unlikely quarter – a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan.

The cost will be £26.50 per person, Seniors £25.50. This covers coach travel, admission to Bignor Roman Villa, ticket for Festival Theatre matinee and coach driver's gratuity. Lunch and refreshments are not included.
